Why Get A Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentations are a very popular plastic surgery procedure that can have a positive impact on the following aspects of a woman’s life:
- Balance of left and right breast size and shape
- Overall balance of body appearance
- Self-image and self-confidence
- Restore breast fullness and shape
Subfascial Breast Augmentation: Our Specialization
Above your pectoral muscle, there is a strong layer of tissue which covers the muscle called the fascia. For this type of procedure, our board-certified plastic surgeons will place the implant under the fascia but above the pectoral muscle. There are a few key advantages in utilizing this method versus subglandular (under the breast tissue but over the muscle and fascia) and submuscular (under the muscle) breast augmentations:
- More natural anatomical placement
- More natural movement with no displacement when moving arms (a common effect with submuscular implants)
- Better cleavage appearance (due to not having to place the implant under the muscle)
- More natural appearance
- Less post-operative pain
- In some instances, eliminate the needs for breast lift
There is a chance, however, that a subfascial breast augmentation may not be right for you. In this case, Dr. Chau and Dr. Tanzman will utilize the best method possible to achieve your desired results regardless if it is under the tissue, under the muscle or under the fascia. The only way to determine which procedure is right for you is to schedule a complimentary in-office consultation with our doctors.
Types of Breast Implants
These implants consist of a silicone shell that is filled with saline (salt water). Versus silicone gel-filled implants, they tend to feel more firm and subsequently less natural. When saline implants are utilized, the empty shell of the implant is inserted first and then filled, thus requiring a much smaller incision. In the event of accidental rupturing, the harmless saline solution is absorbed into the body.
One downside to saline-filled implants is the occurrence of rippling. Our surgeons can help prevent this from happening by utilizing a submuscular-type breast augmentation.
These implants consist of a silicone shell that is filled with a silicone gel. The silicone gel mimics the consistency of human fat and therefore looks and feels more like natural breast tissue.
Placement of silicone implants can be either subglandular (under the breast tissue but over the muscle and fascia), subfascial (under the membrane covering the muscle but over the muscle itself) or submuscular (under the muscle).
In the case of rupturing or leaking, this type of implant will maintain its shape and integrity. Because of this, the FDA recommends (but not mandatory) an MRI screening after 3 years to proactively detect ruptures or leaks.
